How The Legacy Began

Designed by the famous architect John Calvin Stevens, the hotel was originally built in 1914 as Breakwater Court. It was later purchased by George and Agnes Boughton in 1947, which marked the beginning of the now-renowned multigenerational legacy of family ownership. George oversaw significant renovations between 1947 and 1948, expanding the number of guest rooms and improving public spaces and recreational offerings. In late 1948, the hotel reopened, taking the new name of The Colony Hotel, renamed to match the Boughton family’s sister property in Delray Beach, Florida.
